I create small- and medium-scale air-dry clay and mixed-media sculptures inspired by dark fantasy, storytelling, and imagined worlds. My work includes figures, miniature environments, and hand-built interactive cabinets, often incorporating reclaimed materials such as weathered wood and deconstructed corn-husk brooms. Many of my pieces connect through ongoing stories, creating something like a three-dimensional storybook. I have hosted sculpture workshops at the San Diego County Fair and The Village Arts Center main patio, as well as numerous public sculpture demonstrations. My teaching approach helps children and adults develop original ideas and guides them in turning those ideas into sculptures. I enjoy encouraging imagination while giving each student room to create something personal and unique.

Class Description

Create an original small-scale sculpture using air-dry clay, found objects, and mixed-media materials. First-time students will learn how to develop and sketch an idea, build an armature, sculpt their piece, and add details, while returning students can learn finishing techniques such as sanding and painting before beginning new themed projects or progressing to larger or more complex sculptures. Students can work at their own pace, whether they want to complete a single project or continue developing their skills over multiple classes.

Materials provided: Aluminum foil, wire, adhesives, shared spray bottles, sandpaper, wood scraps, corn husk fibers, and other clean, found materials.

Please bring: Optional: Bring a sketchbook or your preferred drawing tools to plan your sculpture. Paper and pens/pencils will be provided. You’re also welcome to bring clean, safe found or reclaimed materials to incorporate into your work.

Additional materials charge: New students: $30 starter materials kit, paid on the day of class. Includes one 2.2 lb package of DAS air-dry clay, basic sculpting tools, acrylic paints, and paintbrushes to keep. Additional 2.2 lb packages of DAS air-dry clay may be purchased for $15 each as needed.
